Business Opportunities And Ideas

Advanced / Winter Driving Instructor

If, like me, you live in the UK then you’ve no doubt enjoyed/suffered (depending on your point of view) quite a bit of snow over the last week.

Unfortunately, early on in ‘the big freeze’ a friend of mine was caught out by the conditions and had a small crash. Fortunately no one was hurt and no other property was damaged but it served as a reminder that driving in snow and ice catches people out. Just to  prove that, the local deliverymen (and one or two neighbours) have been slip sliding all over the place on our local roads, demonstrating a complete lack of knowledge with respect to driving in snow and ice.

Then finally one of the forum’s I read had this video posted on it:

I hope that was staged and that no sane person would ever get out of the car and risk going under it. But you never know…

All this got me thinking. It seems to me that most people haven’t a clue how to drive safely in wintery conditions so perhaps there’s a business opportunity here – teaching people to drive safely in snow and ice and how to recover control of the car when things go wrong.

Sure there are places they could learn this already (the IAM – Institute of Advanced Motorists – for one), but a commercial organisation would be able to build/buy/hire a skid pan/car and give people both an ‘experience’ and a useful winter driving lesson.

The biggest challenge would be marketing this business, as most people think they are good drivers and wouldn’t acknowledge their need to improve. So marketing it as an ‘experience’ might be the only way.

I don’t think this is a business opportunity here. How often you get this kind of driving condition here in the UK? Once, twice a year and sometimes you don’t have snow on the roads at all for couple of years. What is the point to set up a business to teach people something they could forget by the next time they need to use the skills gained as a result of the training?
Of course, this is a good idea but I cannot see it happen here in Britain.
A good idea would be to teach the people to drive on the motorway because you’ve got quite some terrible driving habits on this kind of roads in this country. To set up an advance driving school who teaches drivers and especially young and new drivers how to drive on the motorway this could also have the support of the governmental bodies interested to reduce accidents on the road.

    zimbrul,

How often do we get this kind of driving condition in the UK?

Well, we get ‘wintery conditions’ *every* winter… Whilst it may be snowing at the moment winter driving is not limited to snow driving.

In most winters there is ice … there doesn’t need to be snow? There could of course be refresher courses….. kinda thinking it’s not such a bad idea really…..
