A reader asks:
Why do you give away your business ideas for free? Is it because free business ideas are bad business ideas?
I give away “free” business ideas because I have, read about or come across more business ideas than I could every possibly execute myself. Besides business ideas in and of themselves are essentially worthless, it’s difficult to protect business ideas and pretty hard to sell business ideas (for much more than a few pounds/dollars). The value created by a business comes from the execution of the business idea, not the business idea itself.
So is a free business idea a bad business idea? Maybe, maybe not. What makes a business idea good or bad largely depends on the environment in which the idea will be executed and the person or persons executing the idea.
So the business ideas on this blog are freely available because the success or failure of any business you build based on one of these ideas will depend on what you do as the entrepreneur executing the idea.
Asking John:
Do you have a business question you would like me to answer? If so you can Ask John or or you can ask on the forums where you’ll get both my input and that of your fellow entrepreneurs.

This blog is about business opportunities and ideas that I spot, think of or hear about and think are useful and interesting. It is intended to provide ideas and inspriation for you to help you find the right business idea for you to then grow it into a successful business.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could sell every business idea you had? I think there are generally two types of people: those that can come up with great ideas and those that can execute them well. It’s rare to find the people that can do both equally well. When someone is really good at both you end up with things like Google and Apple.
Sure would.
I’m not sure I agree on the second part though, I think everyone can come up with great ideas. It’s executing the ideas, let alone executing them well that most people fail on.
Bouncing ideas and brainstorming is one of my favourite passtimes, and in the past, having had a small below the line agency, I’ve done loads of this. An idea is only as good as its execution, and that ultimately lies with the person getting stuck in and doing the hard graft. I’ve all too often seen really good ideas come to naught because of a lack of leadership.
I think the most frutsrating thing of being an entrepreneur is that you have business idea that you cannot put to work. So I guess giving them for free is a compromise in some way.
I totally agree. I also donate my business idea and I hope someone else is successful with one of them. In addition, I try do educate people about business strategy. I agree with this. Actually, I think all business ideas have the same basis and it’s how you execute the business idea that will make you the big money. Two men start a company with the same business idea but only one of them has huge success because of the execution.
