Badger Or Bust – The Peter Principle

on May 16th, 2007

This weeks episode of Badger or Bust saw Ruth Badger working with Greentrees, a company selling motor homes and caravans. With over one million pounds of stock apparently sitting on the forecourt the business had a rather hefty £3000 of interest per week to cover which in real terms means that NOT selling actually costs this company money.

Greentrees didn’t exactly come across as an enterprising company though, with their trio of squabbling salesman, and a boss that literally did not even know what day of the week it was. On top of that the boss had promoted the best salesman to sales manager – a clear example of the Peter Principle in action (the Peter Principle states that people within an organization tend to get promoted to their level of incompetence).

Personally had I been in Badger’s shoes I’d have suggested demoting the sales manager, he was a good salesman, so should have been out selling, besides if the team were well trained they should not have needed a full time sales manager for just three of them.

As with last time the main lesson is invest in your sales, without sales you don’t have a business. The secondary lesson is to deploy your staff in roles that best utilise their strengths.
