Teen Business Ideas – MP3 Guru

on May 16th, 2007

Every time I visit London I wish I’d invented the iPod, they’re everywhere. It’s also easy to get the impression that anyone who doesn’t have an iPod has some other form of MP3 player – especially if you spend some time on the tube.

The big drawback with any MP3 player is the time it takes to convert your CD collection (or even worse tape collection) to MP3 and then upload it to the player. There is at least one business, Hungrypod that addresses this market but it’s based in New York leaving a great opportunity available for teenage entrepreneurs elsewhere.

Getting started is easy, after all most teens tend to have a computer and MP3 player already. You will then just need to setup some marketing, flyers left with the local stockist of MP3 players and a “Is this teen the next Richard Branson” type press release to the local press should ensure some local news coverage.

The way to take this further is perhaps to offer to buy back MP3 players when people (as they inevitably do) upgrade, perhaps buying their old player back in part exchange. The old players can then be sold on ebay or locally (I know a number of runners who like cheap, solid state, MP3 players to take running in case they get damaged/lost/stolen). There’s scope to also charge a modest fee for uploading all their current music to the new player so it comes ready to go.

This post is part of the my teen business week series.

I was so impressed by this idea that I have set up a similar service in Scotland but covering the whole of the UK.

Hi, I am a 16 year old A level student and was wondering if you could give me a little bit more information about this business as I am very interested in starting it myself…
I assume customers would need to send me their MP3’s and Ipods in order for the music to be put on them?
Secondly is it possible to do this with just a computer, instead of buying specialist equipment?

    Thanks for the Blog…
