Why is it that so many small businesses waste money advertising in the likes of the Yellow Pages? I’m not suggesting the Yellow Pages or other directories are a waste of money, what I mean is they buy the space in the directory and then put in a terrible advert that is unlikely to make them stand out from the other local businesses advertising in the directory.

It’s not just directories though, even looking through the local newspapers and magazines most advertising is terrible, seemingly designed by the business themselves (ugly) or by a graphic designer (looks nice but still doesn’t selll the business). So why oh why do small businesses not make better use of the advertising space they buy?

Perhaps there’s an opportunity here for someone to start up a business selling good old fashioned direct sales training or even advertising design to small businesses.
