Valleywag recently published a post “Is 30 too old to start a company?” which suggests that Silicon Valley’s current wisdom is: don’t fund anyone over 30. Ouch, that’s me scuppered then! They put together this table:

That shows some of the top technology startups. Their figures are based on a quick check on the great tech companies of the last three decades. The average age of the founders being 26.
It’s an interesting table to look at but with very little meaning, after all it’s such a small selection of companies and noticeably misses out several of the rapid growth companies (Netscape) or highly successful tech firms (Hewlett Packard, Oracle) founded by the over 30s. That’s the joy of statistics, you can normally get any result you want.
