If cooking is your forte there’s nothing to stop you producing your own range of home cooked foods. Anything from preparing homemade jams and puddings through to providing premium home made “microwave meals” can and has been done.
It’s a tried and tested business opportunity, there are dozens if not hundreds of well known food brands that started out as one determined person at home in their kitchen, the most recent is probably Levi Roots and his Reggae Reggae Sauce, as seen on Dragon’s Den.
It’s a great home business if you have a passion for cooking as you’ll almost certainly already have the equipment you need (even if your kitchen might not look as good as Jamie Oliver’s). Thus your startup costs are minimal, you might even get away with only needing to buy ingredients – and if the first batch doesn’t sell it’s food for the family!
The downside is you’ll need to contact the local council and ensure you meet health and safety standards, which I’m sure you will, but local councils don’t always seem to be that prompt in responding.
Levi Roots was in my mind one of the best investment opportunities on Dragon’s Den and has exactly what it takes to make a success of home cooked food. Along with the obvious key selling points of home cooked food, he brings character and personality to the brand, which makes it feel homely and personal despite the fact that I’m buying it in Sainsburys!
Success of course, does not have to be getting it into supermarkets, instead you might want to remain small and focus on the premium local market, it all depends what you want from your business.

Hi John,
Just found your site this morning. Great site with info.!
Want more info. on home cooking food – how, where and who to market? Any articles or process available?
I have been thinking of cooking home made food for office people – who works far away from CBD areas or cafeterias, etc. ie. people who are stuck with just a boring canteen food. I like to cook and deliver food to them but not sure how to start.
your feedback is appreciated.
