For the last few years I’ve run (albeit slowly) the Bath Half Marathon I’ve also done a few 10K races in between and supported my wife at a couple of Race For Life events, all of which has been great fun.
At each and every event there’s been a wide range of runners but the majority seem to be young, fit and healthy all wearing the best (expensive) gear and sipping isotonic sports drinks.
Yet who has the food concession? The hot dog and burger van. I’m sure they must get good business from it (otherwise they wouldn’t be there) but surely there’s scope to sell something healthier to all these fit runners and their families. I know I for one (much as I love a burger) would rather buy a good smoothie or glass of fresh fruit juice and tub of fruit from them, or if hot food is the order of the day spaghetti bolognese can be made cheaply and served with whole wheat pasta.
Just buying a job lot of the small bottles of innocent down the local cash and carry, then selling them from a picnic table would prove if this is a viable business opportunity. At very least the burger vans ought to add a range of smoothies to their fridges and give it a try.
