This book ties in with the new ITV show Peter Jones’s Tycoon. Unlike a lot of tie in books though it doesn’t just regurgitate the contents of the show, instead it is a guide to becoming a Tycoon, the Peter Jones way.
Jones starts the introduction by telling us that he’s never read a business book, I think it shows, but in a good way, as he doesn’t end up repeating the usual advice in the usual way. Instead he treats us to his Ten Golden Rules – which is a great read followed by sections on putting your imagination to work, finding the big idea, planning and pitching (anyone doing a rubbish pitch on Dragon’s Den after this really has no excuse), making it happen and building your future.
He ends with a description of his time on TV, which reads a bit like an adult version of the old school favourite essay “what I did on my holidays”, but it’s great you get a real feel for his excitement and it gave me a better feel for who he is as a person rather than a TV persona.
Overall it’s not the easiest book to read, nor the most interesting business book review I’ve ever done but I’ve enjoyed reading it and more importantly I think anyone looking to start their own business ought to read it through, especially the Ten Golden Rules and Pitching and Planning.
