Over the last few years since moving away from web development for customers, I’ve considered moving my focus to other types of business. In that time I’ve invested in property, done some property development and launched (and quickly scrapped) a business magazine, I’ve also looked at a fair few other ideas and opportunities. Despite these little adventures, I keep returning to the Internet and the opportunities it presents. Here’s five reasons why:
- Low Startup Costs – I can buy a domain name for less than £3, hosting for a year will cost me around £20 from someone like Heart Internet. I can then start my advertising on a pay per click basis with a budget as low as £5. In fact as I already have hosting services it only actually costs me the price of a domain name and any advertising to try a new business idea out. When all you’re risking is £3 and some spare time it’s easy to try fun, new and interesting ideas.
- Global Reach – The Internet is accessible from almost anywhere in the world and is used daily by millions if not billions of people worldwide. All of those people could potentially be your customers.
- Easy To Automate – It’s easy to build a fully automated business on the Internet. Once your business is fully automated you don’t have to worry about staff costs and associated management challenges scaling as the business scales. You don’t have recruitment issues (or costs) nor do you have to worry about staff being lazy or letting you down. What’s more an automated business can be…
- Always Open – No matter where in the world your business is based it’s always 9am somewhere. So while a high street shop can only sell locally for 9 or 10 hours a day you can be making money 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
- Portable – If you’ve got an automated business which runs entirely without you it’ll continue to operate wherever you are, so with the global reach of the Internet you’re free to go wherever you fancy and the business moves with you.
Making money online makes sense to me, what do you think?

It’s very statisfying although if you depend on Google it can be stressful!
Portability, flexibility, and no damn chief. That’s way I love it!
It would be cool to add something to your list, but it looks like it’s complete

These are all great reasons.. there’s only one negative i would think – the idea that you may not make any cash for the first little while – and that can be trying.

You can patent in each individual country or you can look for a worldwide patent. See The Patent Office for more information.
