Driving Experience Days

on March 21st, 2007

Maybe it’s just because I miss my Mitsubishi Evo VI that I sold recently but I’ve been thinking about sports cars and tack days recently. They’re great fun and it’s a rapidly growing business sector. A few years ago my brother and I had the idea of starting a business offering sports car hire / driving experience days, based on the fact that a) we were at one (we like them) and b) we were prepared to pay £10-£20 per lap for the chance to drive fast cars around a race track.

We watched the companies that where at the track day and noticed that the astute ones were fully booked before the event and managing to get around 20 laps per hour from their cars by efficient planning. They kept that up for roughly 5 hours that the track was open (it really helped that the venue ran open sessions rather than fixed time sessions). So at 20 laps over 5 hours thats 100 laps earning between £1000 and £2000 per day per car.

Now if you factor in the costs of keeping the cars maintained and properly serviced that’s probably not a massive profit, the real profit comes from the added extras such as on board Video or DVD at £20 per session, photos, branded clothing, books, passenger laps and any other extras you can think of to sell them.

The other trick for maximum profit we decided was to have cheaper cars – you can charge roughly the same per lap for a Ferrari 360 as you can a Lotus Elise but the Lotus is a lot cheaper to buy and maintain. Plus if you buy cheaper cars you could potentially afford to buy three or four different cars and up the average sales value by offering a combination of cars in the experience. You might also be able to get repeat business from those wanting to try a different car next time. Plus running more than one car per day spreads your overheads.
