Business Opportunities And Ideas

Gardening Services Business

on August 9th, 2007

rose gardenI’m doing the good neighbour thing at the moment and watering a neighbours garden plants while they are away and as always when I’ve got some time to myself, it got me thinking about business opportunities. I know my neighbours have invested quite a bit of their time and money getting their garden to look as nice as it does now and I’m sure they’d hate to see it deteriorate while they are away. I’m also sure there are many other households that are the same. While it’s common to ask a neighbour to look after the garden while we’re away it’s not always possible, especially around this time of year when most families with kids of a school age are off on holiday.

On top of that there are those of us that appreciate a nice garden, but are not good at maintaining it. I for example hate mowing the lawn as I suffer from hayfever, so it’s usually a distinctly unpleasant experience.

So I believe there’s a possible market for a gardening services business which would do the very basic things that perhaps wouldn’t interest a landscape gardening business – mowing the lawn, weeding, watering the plants, pruning etc. Basic upkeep in other words.

The business could focus on serving those that need temporary help due to holidays, illness and the property being temporarily empty. No doubt there’s hotels and parks locally too that you may be able to pitch to the owners or local council for as you grow.

To get started you wouldn’t need much more than the basic gardening equipment (which you probably already own) and a vehicle to transport them in. Your only real startup cost should be the time and effort required to create a simple leaflet advertising your service and to post a couple of thousand through the letter boxes of local properties. Start in the well off neighbourhoods as they are more likely to be cash rich and time poor and therefore more likely to become your customers.
