Every so often I re-evaluate getting 3G mobile phone that can connect to my laptop so I can browser the Internet where ever I am. Even then however I’ll be at the mercy of reception and either limited bandwidth or an expensive data tariff. Instead I tend to rely on the fact that most of the places I’m going have a Wifi network I can us, often for free.
That said it would be really nice to be able to work while on the train, so I wonder why the Train Operating Companies (TOCs) have not added Wifi to their carriages. I think it would be a great opportunity to increase the value to businesses of travel by rail, which in turn would make the idea of travelling by rail more appealing to business people like me.
Maybe as it’s not their core business it’s not something they would do themselves, perhaps there’s a business idea for a third party here, install, operate and maintain Wifi in the carriages paying the TOC’s for access to their customers.
