According to mychildspack.com, since 1999 over 328 incidents of school violence have occurred in the USA, leaving 229 dead and 422 injured. That is an average of roughly one per week. That’s a very scary statistic.
Mychildspack.com however have seen this as a business opportunity and created lightweight childrens backpacks which include a ballistic panel apparently as good as police body armour. They claim that:
In almost 97% of these documented incidents, MJ Safety Solutions backpack could have provided the ballistic protection that could have saved lives.
Which for a product that costs $175 means I’d buy one if my kids went to school in the USA, after all the last backpack I brought cost around $100, so $75 more for something that may keep them safe seems like good value.
I hope they’re thinking bigger however as I’m believe there would be other opportunities for such lightweight protection, and not just the military – journalists, contractors, and NGO staff in war zones, travellers overseas in some of the less civilised countries, or even ordinary citizens in countries that face regular terrorist threats.
