People CAN influence you negatively, and I think that's what he's trying to say. Maybe you should talk to them, but not ONLY them (try to keep it balanced?). It would be foolish not to go with an idea just because someone told you not to do it, just as it would be foolish to go with it only because someone encouraged you.
