We’d all like to be better and we’d like our businesses to be better but it’s all to easy to dismiss big jumps in improvement as being too hard, or requiring too much time when we’re just too busy to spare it.

Mostly we’re just making excuses however. As the old Chinese proverb says:

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step.

So forget trying to make a 100% improvement to your business and look for that first small step, find something you can do to make your business 1% better today. For example try any one of the following:

• Read a book on a business related topic that you do not know much about.
• Read a business autobiography about about a successful entrepreneur / business.
• Call up a customer and ask them what you could do to improve your business.
• Dust of that business plan and review it.
• Check the results of your marketing – you do monitor it’s ROI don’t you?
• Ask your staff for ideas to improve the business – implement one, if it works keep doing it, if not stop.
• etc…

Then do it again tomorrow pick something else that will give you a 1% improvement. Do it again the day after and the day after that. The great thing is, if you keep looking for and implementing ways to achieve a 1% improvement every day then after just 70 days you’ll be 100% better than you are now. Doesn’t that seem easier?
