Swearing As Stress Relief

on October 17th, 2007

The BBC is reporting that academics at a Norfolk university have discovered that:

Swearing at work helps employees cope with stress.

Apparently swearing boosters team spirit. Fair enough we all like to have a rant occasionally when something annoys use. Professor Yehuda Baruch, the professor of management behind the study discourages swearing in front of customers saying:

In most scenarios, in particular in the presence of customers or senior staff, profanity must be seriously discouraged or banned.

Now did we really need a professor of management to undertake a research study to tell us that? I hope not.

One more reason to start your own business-sans the swearing. = )

He only says “In most scenarios …” so I’m wonder when he thinks it’s OK to swear at customers.

Personally I think I’ll keep trying not to swear in front on anyone.

Very funny. If I ever dropped the “f bomb” in front of my customers I could expect them not to return!

    That’s funny.

I would see why swearing could enhance a team spirit.

In the Western business culture, things are much more appropriate and politically correct disregarding if it is with customers or with colleagues. But if you go to a culture like Japan, it is a “must-do” that employees do something stupid together to have a bonding experience and boost morale. Even with customers as well, you have to do something stupid to entertain customers. Swearing is not a good way to entertain customers, even in that culture….

Also not a good idea in front of your spouse and kids.

It all depends who the swearing is about in an office. Anyway most of the bosses I’ve known have been worse than the employees.
