iPhone Addons

on October 22nd, 2007

iphoneJust months after the launch of the iPhone there is a rapidly emerging industry providing third party products for it. A recent Dow Jones report stated that:

Under the right conditions, the iPhone’s ecosystem of third-party companies and software developers could equal the one surrounding Apple’s iPod lineup of media players… There’s an estimated $1bn in sales annually of iPod add-ons.

The report also notes that investors are now starting to take an interest in iPhone-related companies. No doubt the investors believe (as do I) that the iPhone will do as well, if not better than the iPod.

So if you’ve got an idea for an iPhone addon perhaps now is the time to start turning that idea into a business. Just think about the range of business opportunities this presents. People will want to insure their iPhone (probably already a saturated market), backup their contacts from it, load their music onto it, play games on it, use it as a PDA, they’ll want a case or cover for it, some headphones, graphics, video software and music to go on it the list goes on and on.

I wonder how those analysts that said it wouldn’t sell feel now?

Hat tip to The Great Startup Game for inspiration.

Surely the battery life is going to be the main problem with it. Can’t imagine it being that long if people are using it for phone calls, music and everything else that comes out for it.
