Peter Jones’ Big Business

on October 28th, 2007

peter-jones-big-businessAs a Dragon Peter Jones turned down the opportunity to invest in the board game Destination London. Now he’s launching his own board game “Big Business”.

‘Peter Jones’ Big Business’ is a family board game for two or more players aged eight and up. Over six rounds encompassing the key areas of setting up and running a business, players are randomly issued with a business, such as “Best Knickers” (a retailer of high class undies) and “Head Office” (a chain of hairdressers).

The object of the game is to beat other players in a race to collect the right kind of staff and make the most money, during rounds including “Pitch to Peter,” “Number Cruncher” and “Spot the Bull”. At different times in the game you can Hire, Fire or Trade employees, and choose to negotiate with Jones over certain decisions.

Jones had this to say about it:

We have tried hard to unravel the mysteries of big business and make it fun for all the family. If it encourages one or two new entrepreneurs to emerge in years to come that will be how I personally will judge its success.

“Big Business,” was unveiled on the 23 October at a London’s world-famous toy store Hamleys, in Regent Street.

To mark the occassion Jones played against a group of youngsters. He lost, saying:

It may be my game but Charlie definitely showed me who’s the boss on this occasion, which I hope says a lot about the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Charlie from Chiswick, London, was one of handful of the youngsters who played the game against Jones at the launch, even Jones had to admit he learnt some new moves.

The other young challengers who played against the multi-millionaire entrepreneur were: Maya Butler and Laura Eastaff, both aged 12, from Guildford, Surrey; Scott Claridge (12), from High Wycombe, Bucks; and Mitch Brant (12), from Chiswick, London.

As well as Hamleys, the game will also be available from Argos, Asda, Amazon and John Lewis.

Lets hope that it’s more successful that Peter Jones’ Tycoon which flopped resulting it ITV pulling it’s premium slot and slashing the program in half.

Now I wonder if I’ll be getting “Big Business” for Christmas?

That is a great concept! Is like an advance version of monopoly.

It would have been funny to see him go up in front of the other dragons asking for investment.

It will be funny to see what happens if it flops after all he’s now following in the footsteps of Rachel Lowe the lady that launched Destination London. Taking a quote from her site:

“The Dragon’s who slated me said that I didn’t know my market and questioned how I would compete with Monopoly. Well, my game was Hamleys number 1 game of Christmas 2004′…Monopoly was at number 3!”

It strikes me that Peter’s game will be seen as a competitor to Monopoly too, so is he going to do as well as her?

Surely by now the majority of houses in the UK have a version of Monopoly. Amazing that it still sells so much. They probably only get dusted off once a year on Christmas day.

Just this moment my set of “Big Business” has arrived (I’ll be reviewing it shortly).

On first impressions the contents looks cheap and it doesn’t look like much effort has gone into putting together the rules.

    Full review coming soon…
