Google Thyself! – Online Reputation Management.

on January 2nd, 2008

Earlier today a new reputation management company contacted me to see if I thought you, my readers, would be interested in their service, and I’ve just I’ve read Seth Godin’s blog for the first time this year and he says:

The first thing to do this year

Google yourself.

If you’re a salesperson, your prospects already do.
If you’re looking for a job, your prospective employers already do.
If you’ve got a job, your co-workers already do.

What do they see? Do you know?

If you don’t like it, you can fix it.

Well I must confess I didn’t Google myself, but only because I’ve conscious of the issues around online reputation management for since 2000, when an interviewer seemed to know far more about me than I expected. In fact he confessed that he’d not actually read my CV properly as he’d just Googled the candidates names and picked the ones that seemed most useful.

So go on Google yourself, as sooner or later your future customer, future boss, future colleges or future wife will. Do the results tell the story you’d like? If not then perhaps it’s time to buy a suitable domain name and some cheap hosting (or even a free blogger account) and put put a simple page about yourself.

Not sure how to? Well the first step is to register your domain name (for example I have johncrickett.co.uk) with the likes of Heart Internet (who also provide some excellent cheap web hosting) then you’ll need to create a simple web page about yourself which you can easily do with Microsoft Word if you’re not fluent in HTML. If you get stuck visit my forums and ask for help.
