Do You Think You Know More About Entrepreneurship Than Guy Kawasaki?

on January 11th, 2008

Do you think you know more about entrepreneurship than Guy Kawasaki?

Was the subject line of an email I recieved on Wednesday from Scott Shane. I have to admit it intrigued me. The email goes on to say:

Do you think you know more about entrepreneurship than Guy Kawasaki?

He took the quiz linked to my new book, Illusions of Entrepreneurship
at

http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/entrepreneurshipquiz.asp

and then blogged about it. See

http://blog.guykawasaki.com/

He got 40 percent right.

The quiz is based on statistics about the USA so being a Brit my answers would be little more than guesses (I didn’t beat Guy).

As one of my most popular posts (Top 5 Business Startup Myths) is along similar lines I let Scott know that I’d be interested in reviewing a copy of Illusions of Entrepreneurship. It duly arrived this morning and I’ve been having a quick flick through. Not surprisingly it’s predominantly focused on the USA, but there’s some interesting facts, for example:

  • The number of entrepreneurs isn’t growing, it steady or even decreasing.
  • Peruvians are more entrepreneurial than Americans.
  • There’s less entrepreneurial activity “up north” in the UK than in the south.
  • Most entrepreneurs start businesses in the service industry.
  • Most entrepreneurs are 35 or over and most small business owners are 45 or over.

I’m going to stop there before I get too engrossed in the book. I’ll post a full review in the coming weeks, in the meantime, have you taken the quiz? Do you know more than Guy Kawasaki?

If you want to find out more about the myths then Scott has also recently contributed a guest post to Guy Kawasaki’s blog on Top Ten Myths of Entrepreneurship.

UPDATE: I’ve now reviewed The Illusions of Entrepreneurship.
