A reader asks:
I want to start my own cleaning company the problem is I don’t know how to start up. I have several business ideas but I think this is easy to start with since it doesn’t require a lot of capital. Please can you give me some advice on how to start?
Well firstly I’d suggest that you only startup a cleaning business if it’s what you REALLY want to do, if you’d much rather be pursuing another business idea then do. Unless you’re fully committed to a business it will probably fail.
Whatever business you choose to pursue I suggest you start by identifying potential customers and then seeing if you can persuade one of them to buy from you. In this case start calling businesses (if you’re aiming to clean offices) or knocking on doors (if you’re aiming for the home market) and offering your services. They’ll no doubt want to know why they should use you so have a reason prepared.
Once you’ve got a customer, then go and buy the tools and material you need and then set about legally creating/registering the business.
Asking John:
Do you have a business question you would like me to answer? If so you can Ask John or you can ask on the forums where you’ll get both my input and that of your fellow entrepreneurs.

I’m looking to start my own business in extreme cleaning like the life of grime. People have been telling me I have to be put on an approved list for the likes of council work and social housing. How would or how could I do this? or take a existing contract over? and also how would I price things out? if you could give me advice on these matters I would be grateful. Thank-you
Dean,
Regarding approved supplier lists, simply contact the council and ask.
How you price the job is entirely up to you. I would suggest you talk to other cleaning businesses and find out what the going rate is to ensure you’re competitive.
