For all that is written about business and business skills there is only one skill that determines the success or failure of your business. That skill is selling. Don’t be fooled by all the talk about entrepreneurs and their varied entrepreneurial skills, the one skill they all have is the ability to sell. Put simply, if you can’t sell, you won’t succeed as an entrepreneur.
But I Hate Selling
Tough, if you want to succeed you’re going to have to sell. Lets be honest few if any of us sat in school dreaming of one day becoming a salesman.
My Product Sells Itself / Is So Good It Will Sell Itself
Don’t kid yourself there are hundreds of mediocre products that far outsell the excellent products they compete with. Why? Because the business producing them focuses on selling.
I Hate Pushy Sales People, I Don’t Want To Be Like That
Good, lets face it, we all hate pushy sales people and given the choice we’ll avoid dealing with them. The good news is you don’t have to be pushy to sell. In fact you’ll do better if you aren’t.
So What Can I Do?
Have a go selling, you’ll probably find it’s not as bad as you expect. Don’t get a chance in your current job? Then visit your local market and ask one of the market traders to help you out by letting you work on their stall (for free) while they train you. Alternatively find a part time job that gets you selling, it doesn’t matter what just get some experience, you’ll find it’s not as bad as you expect. You aim is simply to get some experience which should help overcome any fear of selling that you have.
On top of that read some of the excellent books on selling Winning New Business by Richard Denny would be a good place to start. If your budget stretches to it get yourself some sales training.

John-
Your stuff is so right on. Sales comes with the package.
I wonder if most people who own their own company don’t sell well because deep down inside they don’t even believe in their own product? Any insights?
Thanks, Jason M. Blumer
Jason,
I’m sure that is a factor for many. Certainly a lot of small businesses owners I meet don’t have enough confidence in themselves or their product.
I’m sure there are also some who realise their product does not provide value.
Regards, John
