A few weeks ago I was sorting out some old boxes of stuff – you know the sort, things you’ll never use again, but you just can’t bring yourself to throw away – in amongst it all I found a diary of my 1985 childhood holiday in Manaus (Brazil). I don’t remember writing it, but clearly I enjoyed doing so and I certainly remember enjoying writing at school.
I started off my “professional” (writing as a professional in the field rather than for payment) writing adventure writing technical (programming) articles for the ACCU’s magazines when I was a software developer. I loved writing those articles because by writing them I was forced to clarify my thoughts on an issue and to communicate them clearly to others, the net result of which was that I learned how to be a better programmer.
In 2003 I wrote a book, Dot Not – A guide to getting your business online. It was published through my business as it was intended to help set us apart from other web development firms by positioning us as experts in our field. It took several months but I absolutely loved it and it helped promote the business. I loved writing the book as it helped me focus on what we could do to help our customers and researching it gave me a better understanding of the problems that our customers faced.
In 2006 I launched the magazine Business World West Wilts, a magazine about growing a business aimed at the local business community in West Wiltshire. I quickly realised however that I love writing, not editing, selling advertising or managing print and distribution so we shut down the magazine. Despite it’s short life I recieved some wonderful feedback and my articles were widely praised. Sadly far too many people wrote to me to let me know that the article We Don’t Serve Chips – Customer Service With An Insult felt familiar. I loved writing the magazine because it gave me a chance to expand my business knowledge while helping other business owners improve their businesses.
Then in 2007 I was struck by a blinding flash of the obvious; I love writing, I have far too many business ideas, I provide consulting to businesses, I’m a techie with lots of Internet marketing experience and experience running Internet businesses – I should be blogging about business! So now I run this blog about business opportunities, business ideas and any other business related topic that interest me. I Love it, I get to write about business topics that interest me and I’m continually learning while I do. As a bonus the blog generates a small income and new clients.
Hopefully in 2008 or 2009 I’ll take my writing one step further and I’ll write another book, perhaps I’ll write a book about starting and running a business. I’m not sure yet, but I am sure I’ll love writing it!
This post is an entry into the My Love Affair With Writing group writing project.
