I came across a post this afternoon titled Untapped Niches and the Mile High Club in which the Michael Gray says:
… tonight I came across a story about a mile high tower being built somewhere and it triggered a thought. Why doesn’t someone run a private jet service that caters exclusively to people who want that James Bond Mile High Club experience. How hard would it be to convert a small plane to have an isolated bedroom chamber?
There would be almost no startup advertising costs, really after a few well placed press releases the concept would absolutely go viral.
Which struck me as a good, probably new business idea. Like all “new business ideas” however it turns out it’s already been done; one of the commentors pointed out that Mile High Atlanta already offers such a service. The trouble is they do it in a PA32:

Which nice as Piper Alpha’s aircraft are (well I like them having learned to fly in a PA28) it’s still a small six seater and going to be cramped. Not to mention noisy and lacking in privacy. Not exactly what I’d call either sexy or romantic.
In responding to the comments Gray suggests that at $299 and highlighting it’s discreetness, it’s “sort of the no-tell-motel with wings” and I’d have to agree. Instead he suggest the service should aim for the luxury/premium end of the market, including a limo service, roses and beautifully fitted out aircraft. Certainly if you launched such a business in the UK I’d take it the whole hog and run flights from the UK to Paris, include a meal out in Paris with a Limo at each end. Host it all on a small private jet and charge several thousand pounds a go.
All you’d need to launch it is an agreement to rent a small private jet (i.e. something big enough to stand up and walk around in) a quick chat with the owner/pilot to determine the costs per hour of flight a website to promote it and take bookings and then some good PR to get it started, I’m sure once people heard about it, as Gray says it would go viral. You might make a nice little sideline selling memorabilia too perhaps a photo of the couple with the aircraft, or their mile high club video diary.
Just to prove there’s plenty of rich people that want to join the club, Richard Branson explained in an interview last year how he joined the mile-high club in a plane toilet; explaining it was “every man’s dream”. Even so I’m sure he’d have preferred a nice bed in a comfy jet! Actually this business idea could even be an interesting new service for Virgin Atlantic!
So is the mile high club the business idea for you?

This blog is about business opportunities and ideas that I spot, think of or hear about and think are useful and interesting. It is intended to provide ideas and inspriation for you to help you find the right business idea for you to then grow it into a successful business.

Hi, Just you your blog and thought you might like to know that Mile High Flights has been up and running for just over a year and regularly takes customers on short flights so that they can join the club.
As for setting up a business…. well that bit took 18 months. The Civil Aviation Authority insist on extremely strict codes of practice and if you want to operate commercially you need a license. No matter how small an operation you are, the paperwork is collosal.
I am sure if you type mile high club into google you will find me. If you’d like to help by spreading the word… Great.
