Alcohol Free Beer

on March 5th, 2007

As my wife is pregnant and therefore not drinking I’ve given up drinking, it doesn’t seem fair to sit and drink in front of her when she can’t. We didn’t drink that much anyway, but I have always enjoyed my beer, so I’ve been experimenting with non alcoholic beers (proper non alcoholic, i.e. 0% alcohol).

This came about as a few weeks ago I was wandering through the large new Tesco’s in Trowbridge I spotted a couple of 4 packs of Cobra 0%, needless to say I bought them. I was pleasantly suprised to find that I can’t tell the difference between it and the normal Cobra beer – it’s excellent. So good that we’d finished it very shortly afterwards. So next trip to the supermarket (ASDA this time) I went for some more, but sadly it seems that all I can find elsewhere is Kaliber, which I’m sorry to say is awful or Becks, which is OK but frankly not a patch on Cobra 0%.

Now I’m sure I’m not the only person that would like a wider choice of alcohol free beers (honest there are others like here) and looking around the Internet it seems there’s a reasonable range of beers from the likes of The Alcohol Free Shop and Only Fine Beer. So why can’t our local supermarkets and pubs stock it? There’s an opportunity there surely? While we’re at it if someone invented alcohol free bitter I’d be even happier!

Yes and wouldn’t it be great too if there was a lot more choice regarding alcohol free red wine! I have only ever found one and it was quite horrible!

The alcohol-free shop linked to in the story sells a lot of alcohol free red wine.

How about alcohol free Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc…bit of a niche market I know, but it would certainly help me in the run up to my wedding by allowing me to drink clean crisp white wine without pilling on the calories :-)

There’s actually alcohol free white wine in most supermarkets… quality is another thing though…

I once went on a tour of the Gales Brewery (in Horndean, Hampshire) about 10 years ago. They mentioned how they once had an alcohol free bitter product. They brewed the beer as normal (to get the flavour), before removing the alcohol with some machine.

It didn’t sell very well, so they stopped producing it.

There are more and more alcohol free beers coming onto the market. There are some great ones I am drinking a Sagres as I type!
