In a wonderfully titled post Innovation … It’s Easy as P___! Tom Peters asks:
If innovation is still the best source of competitive advantage, then this truism should apply beyond the world of fashion, IT, and pharmaceuticals, and into less obviously promising areas, like aircraft toilets!
He goes on to explain that men account for 70% of aircraft passengers and that 75% of toilet trips are to p___ in which case 52.5% of toilet trips on aircraft are to men off for a p___ which causes him to ask:
Why are there no men’s urinals on planes, as there are in just about every other venue where men and women co-exist in large numbers?
Now I have to admit it’s not an issue that’s ever occurred to me, but if it’s troubling the mind of a business guru like Peters then maybe it’s an issue the rest of us should be concerned about – so if urinals is your thing, then it’s a great business opportunity just waiting for you to take it! I look forward to seeing your pitch on Dragons’ Den. I bet they’ll take the p___.
In all seriousness however Peters is making an important point that far too many businesses forget; innovation isn’t limited to big things or high tech industries, it’s something every business should be constantly striving for in everything they do, no matter how small.
