JUST What It Says On The Tin

on June 11th, 2008

vegs I popped down my local mini-supermarket a couple of days ago to grab a few essentials for breakfast. One of which was some yogurt for my young son. Looking at the yogurts on offer however I had quite a shock. They are full of all sorted of extra’s that you wouldn’t expect. Sure none of it is particularly unsavoury, but it’s still not what I would expect to find in the yogurts and more importantly not what I want to feed to my young son.

Equally I’ve been shocked by the list of ingredients in “Organic baby foods” it seems that because the ingredients are “organic” the manufactures think they can get away with putting just about anything into these food, even if it’s widely acknowledged that babies shouldn’t be eating those ingredients at that age. Sadly though a lot of parents see the word “organic” on the label and assume it must be good for their babies.

Becoming a Dad has turned me into an avid label reader and I’m not impressed. So how about some food that is JUST what it says on the packaging? You know like Innocent is for smoothies.

You’ll be surprised exactly what goes into some food and they do not always include every ingredient.

The thing that amazes me is that if it is ‘fresh’ you do not have to label the contents at all! Pret for example, have generic sandwich cases and do not list contents – as the product is fresh – explain that!

Yeah, my four month old daughter- we feed her baby food- the stuff we feed her lists the ingredients as: Peas, water. or Carrots, water, etc.. but my wife’s grandmother picked up some baby food with like 14 ingredients- we didn’t feed that to the poor girl. It was labeled “STAGE 2- SIX MONTHS AND UP” as if magically at six months it’s OK to start feeding babies more chemicals.
