I’m very pleased to see that the business reality TV show The Restaurant returns to BBC 2 this week with two episodes for its brand new second series Wednesday 10th September 20:00 on BBC2 and Thursday 11th September 20:00 on BBC2.
Why am I pleased to see it return? Quite simply because it is by far the best business reality show on TV. Dragons’ Den is a show about quirky inventors, egotistical business angels and those looking for their 15 minutes of fame, in short it is now firmly an entertainment show and no longer business show. Meanwhile The Apprentice is nothing more than high pressure direct sales. Gavin Ingham sums that aspect up by referring to it as The Sales Apprentice and when it’s not about sales it’s a pantomime as the editors build up and knock down the "characters" on the show.
In contrast to all of this The Restaurant covers real business, showing real business issues within the context of nine real businesses. Throughout the series it show how each couple handles real business issues covering all the aspects of running a small business, the deal with:
- marketing;
- public relations;
- managing customer relationships;
- leadership;
- staff management;
- stock management;
- purchasing;
- scheduling;
- and everything else related to running a restaurant.
If you want some reality to you business "reality TV" then you’ll be watching The Restaurant.
