I walked past a high street based office today which had "By Appointment Only" in large letters on the door. Sure it might have seemed like a good idea to stop cold callers and door to door salesmen by having a "by appointment only" policy. The problem is:

  • Bad sales people will ignore it. After all they probably don’t care about offending you, or have been trained/told to just keep pushing.
  • Good sales people will work around it, after all they’ve learned how to overcome objections.
  • It’ll put off customers, who may well just walk on by and visit your nearest competitor instead.

Is that really the result you were hoping for?

Perhaps it might be better to replace the "By Appointment Only" with "Come on in for help with …", what do you think?
