My fellow small business blogger Stefan Töpfer is the CEO of WinWeb a company that offers online software for small businesses, unfortunately both he and WinWeb are having a bad week. The problem is someone has registered the domain – WARINING DO NOT VISIT IT – winwebsecurity.com and is using it to promote an apparently malicious piece of software disguised as a virus checker. As a result Stefan and his team have had a difficult week. On his blog Stefan notes:

Some of these conversations have been very unpleasant to say the least. Winweb security has nothing what so ever to do with us, WinWeb. We provide software and business services online to start and run a small business. All our software is ‘online’, we do not upload programs onto your computer, nor do we scan your computer for viruses.

Unfortunately malicious activity like this can easily damage the reputation of a business, so I wish Stefan and his team the best of luck in getting the site taken down and restoring their good name. Sadly it’s a reminder once again that there’s a business opportunity in reputation management and the takedown of malicious sites.
