A lot of would be entrepreneurs spend a lot of time trying to find the best business ideas or the best business opportunities. As a result I often get asked to pick the best idea from a list of the entrepreneurs best business ideas. Usually I try to explain that it depends how you define best and who the idea is best for? The best business idea for me, given my skills, experience, interests and beliefs is likely to be very different to the best idea for you and your combination of skills, experience, interests and beliefs.
Even if I could clearly choose the best business idea, how well it works as a business will depend on the entrepreneur behind it and the passion they have for the idea. Because ultimately the idea is not as important as the entrepreneur and their belief in it, passion for it and determination to make it happen. Seth Godin sums this up nicely in his new book Tribes, saying:
In a battle between two ideas, the best one doesn’t necessarily win. No, the idea that wins is the one with the most fearless heretic behind it.
So stop looking for the best business idea and start looking for the business idea that turns you into a fearless heretic!
