Dangerous Adventures For Boys

on December 15th, 2008

As the conductor of a band my wife is out a couple of evenings each week running rehearsals, which means I’m left to put our son to bed. Unfortunately unlike her I haven’t mastered the knack of settling him down, so more often than not we head back downstairs and settle down for a boys night in front of the television, as he’ll happily fall asleep snuggled up in my arms. The only problem with this plan is the fact that we don’t feel he should be watching a lot of television and certainly not adult TV that’s shown in the evenings.

Fortunately in recent years someone had the foresight to realise that video recorders and later PVRs were a great business idea, so now throughout the week I fill the PVR with interesting shows (usually documentaries) that I don’t mind him watching with me. One such show has been Dangerous Adventures For Boys (which is based on the bestseller ‘The Dangerous Book for Boys’ by Con and Hal Iggulden).

Dangerous Adventures For Boys is a six part series in which celebrity dads and their sons take part in adventures, ranging from a Battle of Britain aerial battle to sailing a tall ship. It’s absolutely fantastic and as Bradley Walsh (pretending to be WWII SAS troopers) noted it’s a great way to bond with his son and get him out from in front of the video games. Not that I have anything against video games as my own enjoyment of them helped shape my career, but I also remember the great fun my brother and I had camping, climbing and abseiling, caving and learning to survive in the wild (every kid should be in the scouts).

The series really makes me look forward to the time when my son can do all these things. So it occurred to me that there’s a business opportunity here, providing the same activities as appear on Dangerous Adventures For Boys (and possibly even in the book, which I haven’t read yet). Given the number of obese children we have in this country I’m sure that there’s plenty of parents that would love to be able to take their kids on such adventures. Not all of them will be able to afford such lavish experiences, but a weekend of survival training in the woodlands could be done cheaply and still be just as thrilling.

If you’re a Dad and haven’t seen it, watch the show on Demand Five now, then comment below. Wouldn’t you love to do that with your kids?

sounds like a top idea on the right lines of a good experience.

Its going to be a struggle to start up though? you have to find land that is close enough to a high density of your demographic as i cant imange people will travel to far (maybe a similar distance to paintball? 45mins average) as well as the land itself being fruitful enough that the woodlands can provide food for humans.

And you would either need to employ someone who is clued up or learn yourself to the extent that you can pass down the knowledge.

you can market towards scouts and other clubs for promotions etc as they would have an instant interest in your idea.

you could also go to RED Letter days or other experience company’s and they may use you as an experience and take a cut of the income they generate for you.

Sorry if thats all rubbish and not what you were looking for but its my first post on this site and i hope it is of some help! :)

This is an example that follows the classically advantageous idea of replacing an item that was a negative with one that is looked forward to. It can be thought of in 2 parts, as you fixed the problem of having your child watch too much nightly TV, and you created a positive time to watch something you are looking forward to. It creates twice the positive feeling that would be gained if only the problem was solved.

I think this is also a great idea and business opportunity, perhaps using the “Dangerous….” logo and their input. I’m a mother with a, just, 11 year old boy, looking for a joint xmas present for my husband and son. Something they can do together to bond more (my husband works 6 days a week and come Sunday is bushed!) ideally the go-karting but with tuition, the steam train experience would be great too…..I think the outlay for this wouldn’t have to be to great…use the “Dangerous…” branding to come up with a serious of courses that you could book at other locations around the country….a little bit like a franchise of courses offered, but run by the people with the land, course, forest etc. etc. etc.
