Tribes: we need you to lead us is marketing guru, Seth Godin’s latest book. In it he argues that in today’s world everyone has the opportunity to start a movement – that is to create a tribe of like minded people and do "amazing things". Godin argues that many of us ignore the opportunity because we are "sheepwalking" our way through our lives, too afraid to question if our compliance is doing us any good.
In that vain Tribes is a series of "riffs" (as Godin would call them) on the topic of leadership, in particular the creation and leading of a "tribe" of like minded souls. Some are fascinating and insightful, others aren’t, overall however it seemed to me to be a rather weak book when compared to Godin’s previous works – in particular it’s a collection of short notes, rather than a traditionally structured book.
Whilst Godin is also undoubtedly very good at creating his own tribe of followers (just look at the popularity of his blog), I don’t believe this is a particularly good book if you’re interested in learning about leadership, instead, if you want a good book on leadership or creating change through leadership, you’re better off reading works by John Kotter (i.e. A Sense of Urgency). Godin’s tribes are, more relevant to those wanting to market to a tribe (think fans and followers).
For those that don’t yet know, Seth Godin is perhaps the best known marketing guru on the Internet. His eponymous blog is one of the most popular blogs and it is in the top 10 on my list of the top 100 business blogs. He’s written numerous books on business and marketing, including The Dip and Purple Cow and regularly speaks worldwide on marketing. He’s also got an MBA from Stanford.
Whilst Tribes isn’t his best work, it’ll only cost you £6.79 (at the time of writing) from Amazon, which is about the same as two pints of beer, put that way it’s value for money and might just help you spot a business opportunity by creating a tribe of your own.
You can buy it from Amazon UK or Amazon USA.
